NSW: Child found safe in abandoned, stolen car

SYDNEY, Aug 15 AAP - A frantic police search for a stolen car containing a toddlerended with relief when she was found sleeping peacefully in the abandoned vehicle nearNewcastle today.

A 62-year-old woman left her three-and-a-half-year-old granddaughter in the child seatof a Toyota Echo as she opened a garage door at Cardiff, Darcy Street, about 2.10pm (AEST).

"A man then took the car, with the girl still inside, and drove off," a NSW Policestatement said.

The stolen car was found 15 minutes later in the driveway of premises in Main Street, Cardiff.

"The girl was still asleep in the back seat, unaware of the afternoon's dramatic search,"

the statement said.

Police were tonight still looking for the thief.

Lake Macquarie Local Area Commander Superintendent Michael Kenny said he was amazedat the brazen theft.

"This family has been extremely lucky today, and the cool weather, along with the swiftpolice response, has played a strong part in minimising the distress of the woman andher granddaughter," Supt Kenny said.

"We are making every effort to identify the man involved, and the car has been forensicallyexamined."

The woman described the thief as being 20 to 25 years old, about 165cm tall, with short,brown hair, of medium build, and having olive complexion.

He was wearing a light grey top with a jumper tied around his waist.
